The U.S. professional road championships will return to Greenville, South Carolina, next year, September 18-19.

The dates are about three weeks later than prior years, slotting the race into a busy month that includes the Tour of Missouri, two UCI ProTour events in Canada, and the world road championships in Australia. September 2010 major road races:

Aug. 28-Sept. 19: Vuelta a EspaƱa Aug. 30-Sept. 5: Tour of Missouri Sept. 10: Grand Prix de Quebec Sept. 12: Grand Prix de Montreal Sept. 18-19: U.S. Pro Championships (Greenville, SC) Sept. 29-Oct. 3: Road World Championships (Melbourne, Australia)

USA Cycling COO Sean Petty said the date change was out of the USAC's control and he appreciates the city's flexibility.

"While the date change was out of our hands, the result is a good one, " Petty said.

In a press release, Greenville resident and reigning pro road champion George Hincapie said he was excited the race would return.

"The new dates should fit nicely into a very exciting fall schedule," Hincapie said. "I'm proud to have won the Championship for the third time and I'm looking forward to defending the title with my new team, BMC Racing. ... It looks like my season will end up with great races like the Tour of Missouri, the new Canadian Pro Tour events, the US Pro Championships and the World Championships."
