Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 - Component Review

Shimano has introduced their newest version of Dura-Ace components, called Dura-Ace Di2. The main features to note are: electronic shifting; a shift-by-wire design; buttons for downshifting on both shifters; and prolonged shifting accuracy due to less cable housing wear and erosion.

The verdict to this point by testers is that shifting is ever more accurate than past versions of Dura-Ace. The Dura-Ace 7900 series, as smooth as it is, even so leaves something to be desired in comparison to the new Dura-Ace Di2. The front derailleur design is a bit more narrow. Multi-cog shifts are more controlled and pop into place compared to previous Dura-Ace components.

The Shimano Di2 shifter design has taken on a new shape. The best way to describe them is simply to say, you'll have to feel them in action to decide if they are better or worse in your own view. The main difference is the downshift buttons, one per lever, which are accessible by the forefingers.

Shimano continues to maintain that its SEIS (Shimano Electronic Intelligent System) technology not only offers better performance than cable shifting systems, but also that electromechanical designs may indeed completely replace mechanical shifting systems in the future. The Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 shifting is better than the current best shifting systems out there. It remains to be seen through many thousands of miles of real rider testing if in fact Shimano's claim about SEIS will come to pass.
