The Surly Pacer doesn't cause race-inspired roadies to drool with desire. It does't sport a cutting edge frame design, it isn't built with the most hip ultra-light and very expensive bike frame materials, and it isn't decorated with overly bright colors and bike decals. What it is, is a road bike made of good ol' reliable cro-moly steel. What we have here is a bike frame that is intended for all day rides. And it makes use of a frame geometry so that it is fast to ride and efficient on the road - exactly like a quality road bike should be, though not necessarily a pure racing bike. It is, to put it simply and directly, a fantastic riding steel frame. Choose the Surly Pacer for a randonneur, and you'll have little worry that this stout frame might break while riding in rough conditions. Surly has recently redesigned the fork to fit a 700 X 28mm tire, so it does in fact offer a wide range of riding options. You can buy it as a complete bike, but most riders will order the frame only and build it to spec with Shimano, SRAM, or Campagnolo parts. Yes, the frame is laterally stiff while still being vertically compliant. That's just a convoluted way of saying that the Surly Pacer is comfortable, yet for sure responds when you go hard on the pedals. This bicycle frame has plenty of tire clearance for larger tires, so you can run up to 32mm tire sizes. That's larger than what is usual for tire sizes for road frames, but bear in mind that larger sized tires ride more comfy. Try out the Pacer with 28mm tires, which is a very good all-around tire size, even allowing you to add fenders for wet riding conditions. It's a do it all bike frame - that means you can race on it, tour on it, commute on it or venture to ride off-road on it. The Surly Pacer might not impress cyclists who crave the next replica team kit or have to have the latest in bike frame technology. What the Pacer does is to remind us with distinction that there is indeed a road bike built for the everyday rider. It is made of 4130 CroMoly steel - main triangle double butted - frame is TIG welded - lugged and brazed - 1 1/8" threadless steer tube,
