Shimano Compact cranks get inner chainrings with tooth profiles that specifically address the greater shifting demands imposed by Compact's 16 tooth difference in chainring size. New composite chainring design for Improved durability. Hollow forging process and use of duraluminum alloy reduces weight while maintaining strength and rigidity. The cranks also may have been installed as an upgrade as part of the Altus, Acera and Alivio groups of components. This special profile is designed to prevent the chain from falling off when shifting down to the inner ring. This design reduces the number of parts, significantly cuts down weight, and increases rigidity.
