For instance, 36/12, 39/13, 42/14 45/15 48/16 all give the same 3:1 ratio. 135mm spacing is associated particularly with modern mountainbikes, but may also turn up on a roadbike with lots of gears. If the chain is too loose, it can fall off, usually at the most inconvenient possible time. In recent years a few companies have started making 13T freewheels compatible with this thread as well, allowing more gearing options. You might be happy with a minimalist single-fixed hub.
