More product description: Friction shifters gave way to index shifters, which do not require fine-tuning during a gear change. For cruising around on flats or downhill, put the left in 3 and the right wherever it feels comfortable (probably between 3 and 7). Sure thing! Ive noticed several of them have that weird cut-off. Especially bad is to combine the inside (small) front sprocket with the outside (small) rear sprocket. Number 1 on your right shifter is the easiest gear for climbing hills, as it puts your chain on the largest rear sprocket. Pedaling faster than your ideal cadence can allow you to generate an extra burst of speed, but you will tire yourself out too soon if you try to maintain an excessively fast cadence. Index shifters rely on uniform cable tension, but over time the derailleur cable will stretch, causing the system to slowly drift to the right of the gear. Remember this general rule for avoiding fatigue failure: if your lungs burn, pick a harder gear;if your legs hurt, pick an easier one.
