More product description: The pin should be sticking out of the LONG piece of chain and the short piece can be discarded. If the chain pin center is less than 1/16th beyond the end of the ruler it's OK. Remove the chain from tool and inspect rivet. Stiff links can sometimes be loosened without a chain tool, by bending the chain left and right. Check manufacturer's specifications. The chainrings and cogs you save by changing your chain are way more expensive to replace. Instead, the lower plate moves with the pin, relative to the upper plate, creating a larger separation; a very small movement is enough to release the pressure of the outer plates against the inner plates, freeing the "stiff link". Make sure everything is aligned perfectly, and then start turning the handle pushing the pin out.
